We aim the units at the intake side of the racks, not at the room in general — the air has to reach the equipment that is heating up.
Hot air leaves the room
Every unit runs an exhaust hose out through the door or a window opening. Cooling a sealed room without ducting the heat out just moves the problem around.
Sized for rack heat, not floor area
A server room is not an ordinary room. Racks pour heat in continuously, so we work to roughly a twentieth of the manufacturer’s floor rating — which is why a rack row usually needs two units, not one.
Nothing drilled, nothing fixed
It is rented equipment. No holes, no wall vents, no installation — the hose goes out of the door and everything wheels back out afterwards.

The workhorse for a comms room with a full rack row — 5500W of cooling on a standard 13A socket. The maker rates it to 70 m², but that is an ordinary room; against a live rack load plan on roughly 3.5 m² per unit.
Kojima 2 HP Portable Aircon
Only 69cm tall and 26cm wide, so it fits a tight aisle or a small comms cupboard — 4200W. Rated to 40 m² in an ordinary room, so figure about 2 m² of server room per unit.

Two things decide whether this works. First, sizing: a portable unit rated for 70 m² of office will not hold 70 m² of server room — against a live rack load, budget around a twentieth of that, which is why we quote two units where one looks like enough on paper. Second, the exhaust routing, which matters more than most people expect. A portable unit produces heat as well as cold, so if the hot air is not pushed out of the room the temperature will keep climbing. We run the hose out through the door — the door closes onto it — or through an opened window, and we check the room is actually holding before we leave.
